Role Model

My dad was a Marine. His name was George. Fought in the Korean war, was wounded at Pork Chop hill and one of the last soldiers to escape alive right before the 10,000 Chinese troops arrived. The shrapnel in his legs left some visible scars. He never talked much about it but when he did the stories told were about brutal deaths and the horrors of war that would scare any man’s soul. I often wondered how anyone who fought in war could escape their nightmares and live a normal life but he was a great role model and dad. He was a quite man dedicated to his family. Worked three jobs to make ends meet and although we had little money we wanted for nothing. When reflecting over the years I realized the simple gifts he gave me, like converting our garage into a gym so we could improve in sports. Helping me buy my first car and his simple lifestyle example of putting others first, telling the truth and always doing the right thing.

He loved his family. He loved his job as a printer but it would eventually kill him. A lifetime of working in and around chemicals led to a fatal cancer. He left this world his shriveled embattled body. He also left his legacy to a proud son who still today uses the various poems, motivational quotes and stories he would create off his printing press and let me pass along to friends and family. So thankful today for his role model. His mostly good habits became mine and helped shape my personality for life. We need to remember how important our personal example is to our families and the world. My dad had character. I didn’t exactly know it at the time but that’s how he lived. He had compassion, integrity and love in his heart for everyone around him. I’ll never live up to what he was but I’ll try.

We need to teach and coach how important it is to know everyone is watching. I hope he might be watching me today. I hope to see him again someday.

Life of Love

Deep thoughts: what do I love? Family, football, pizza, people….God? can this be the same love?
Once heard: love exists because we all are born with a hole in our hearts that only God can fill.
Love is the oxygen in the soul.

The presence of love gives a lifetime of blessing.
Bible has a lot to say on the subject: N.I.V. love mentioned 744 times.
#1 fruit of the Spirit= Love (Gal. 5:22)
Charity= Love in action
Love of God is poured into us through the Holy Spirit. Continues to grow inside.
Love hugs the lonely, feeds the hungry, tends to the sick, comforts the weary.

AGAPE (Jn. 3:16) sacrificial, unconditional.
“its power moves us to respond to someone’s needs with no expectation in return.”
Read the Love Chapter= Paul to Corinthians: chapter 13:1-13…..the greatest of these is love.
“Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, love is not pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interest, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, endures all things.” Vs 4-8.
Ephesians 5:1-2 “So be imitators of God, as beloved children and live in love, as Christ loved us and handed himself over for us as a sacrificial offering to God for a fragrant aroma.”

John 13:34 “I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.”
John 15:12 “This is my commandment: love one another as I love you.”
John 15:17 “This I command you: love one another.”
1 John 3:23 “And his commandment is this: we should believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another just as he commanded us.”

And they’ll know we are Christians by our Love……

Wisdom and Making Decisions

By now most of you know I consider the book of Proverbs not only one of favorite books in the whole Bible but one of usefulness and value. (see attached list of some favorites).

Recently on the road we’ve been discussing making good decisions in life and work but not many speak about using the Bible to assist. Hence sharing the wisdom contained in Proverbs. An old poem I memorized long ago comes to mind: “Upon the plains of hesitation, bleached the bones of countless millions, who upon the threshold of victory sat down to wait. And waiting they died.”

So many time’s we seem paralyzed to make a prudent decision. It’s always easier to get into something than it is to get out. I think of relationships…. Easier to get into debt that get out…. Recently I think of war.

Most likely we won’t die if we hesitate as the poem suggests. Many time’s it’s wiser not to make a quick decision. Let’s look at what the Bible teaches us on Decision Making:

  • Pray for Guidance: Proverbs 28:26 “A man is a fool to trust himself! But those who use God’s wisdom are safe.” Ask God to guide us before we jump in.
  • Get the Facts: Proverbs 13:6 “All who are prudent act with knowledge.” Research first and gather as much data as possible.
  • Ask for Advice: “The more advice you get the more likely you are to win.”
  • Calculate the Cost: Proverbs 20:25 “It’s a trap to dedicate something rashly and only later to consider one’s vows.” Every decision has a price tag. It costs time, money, energy, reputation, talent. A wise decision is better than a quick decision.
  • Prepare for problems: Proverbs 22:3 “A prudent man foresees the difficulties ahead and prepares for them. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.”
  • Face your fears: Eccliastes 11:4 “If you wait for perfect conditions, you will never get anything done.” We should trust God and start moving in spite of problems, fears, doubts.

We all need to remember we are imperfect. Remember the lesson how God uses imperfect people to do His will……Moses couldn’t face crowds, Abraham too old, David too young…….

Reflection on Leadership

If you think you are a leader you probably want to be a good one. You need to act like one. You need to portray good habits. Good language. Do the right things at home, work and wherever the day takes you. You desire to be a good role model. You teach right vs wrong. You want the team to succeed and you realize it’s not about your needs. There’s a certain maturity in accepting responsibility. You realize you can’t fumble. Others are counting on you. What you say and what you do have to match up. You know your limitations but refuse to accept them. You know deep down “Can’t Never Could”. So, take your vitamins and take a look at my thoughts and Life Lessons… of good Leadership:

  • Acknowledge the work of others
  • No one is self-made. It’s always a team effort
  • Always be aware of your surroundings, observe like the Terminator
  • Always take the high road
  • Constantly work on your listening skills
  • Constantly remind yourself, you are second
  • Be Kind, like Mother Teresa, everyone has a story
  • Practice empathy and compassion
  • Coach or correct in private
  • People are always watching- act like it
  • Use the word Love more
  • Use the phrase I’m sorry more

“I pray for humility every day. I believe pure leaders are secure in their own skin with the main purpose of elevating others.”

A Life of Self-Discipline

“Without Discipline one cannot learn to be free.”

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, German Theologian from “Cost of Discipleship”

When we think of discipline we think of our ability to govern ourselves. The etymology of Latin origin “discipulus”: instruction, knowledge and has the same root word as disciple, the notion of surrendering ourselves to something or someone. Like an athlete surrendering to the coach “All athletes practice strict self-control. They do it to win a prize that will fade away but we do it for an external prize. So, run straight to the goal with purpose in every step. I am not like the boxer who misses his punches. I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified.” 1 Cor. 9:25-27 or the Christian surrendering to God and His wisdom. Resplendent and unfading is wisdom, and she is readily pursued by those who love her and found by those who seek her.” Wisdom 6:12

I also think of discipline as self-control, the last of the 9 fruits of the Holy Spirit and not by chance. Self-control summarizes all the others. We need it if we are to seek after wisdom and walk with the wise.

I have found that the book of Proverbs is written for us to gain discipline for wise conflict management. Solomon himself said we should love discipline. (Proverbs 12:1) As coaches we need to demand it. We need not ask our people to try harder. We need as the athlete knows….to Train harder– both physically and spiritually.

Self-control gives us virtue, helping us to regulate our thoughts and emotions and choose between right and wrong in every part of our lives. It helps us to post pone immediate gratification. We need to battle for a disciplined life. It’s human nature to have 2 natures. I don’t understand myself at all, for I really want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do the very thing I hate. When I want to do good, I don’t. When I try not to do wrong, I do it anyway.” Romans 7: 15,19.

“The old sinful nature loves to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Holy Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are opposite from what the sinful nature desires. These 2 forces are constantly fighting each other and your choices are never free from this conflict.” Galatians 5:7

Two natures inside me- fighting within
One is love the other sin
Never certain which will win
But the one I feed will proceed Summer’82
“A person without self-control is a defenseless as a city with broken down walls.” Proverbs 25:28
“Those who control their tongue will have a long life, a quick retort can ruin everything.” Proverbs 13:3
